Samsung Galaxy S24 phones may get 7 years of updates
According to insiders, Samsung will provide the Galaxy S24 series with seven years of security and software updates. Currently, this is limited to just four years.
For years, it was a significant advantage of iPhones: iOS updates for old iPhones. Over at Android, it was a whole different storey. Cheaper smartphones should be happy with just one update; more expensive models often had two. Samsung extended that to four years for select Galaxy models, and Google recently surpassed that by supporting Pixel models for seven years. Now Samsung wants to match that.
According to a rumour that appeared at Android Headlines, Samsung would revamp the update policy for the upcoming Galaxy S24 series. Additional evidence for this is not given. Still, they are convinced that Samsung will give the S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra up to seven years of updates. This would include not only security updates but also Android upgrades.
If the Galaxy S24 comes out with Android 14, that means a promised upgrade to Android 21 somewhere in the year 2031.
A generous update policy
With this, Samsung is matching Google's update policy. And that's good news for consumers. Buyers can be assured that their new mobile will have updates for its entire lifespan. Hopefully, this trend will be adopted by other Android manufacturers.
Galaxy AI
It remains to be seen how well Galaxy S24 models will function after 2030. According to the same source, Galaxy AI features will no longer be free to use by then. The many AI features are expected to be a big selling point for the S24 series. Galaxy AI will possibly only be free for the first two years; a subscription may be needed after that period.
