The two parts are connected to each other through a fold machanism that makes it possible to bring to two parts closer. The mobile phone needs to be opened before use. An advantage to this is that you can not unintentionally answer a call when you push a button accidentally. It also offers more protection for the display and makes the chance of stratches unlikely. Most of the clamshell phones have a function called 'Active Flip' whereby a call can be answered or ended by opening or closing the phone. The term 'folder' has also been used for a clamshell mobile phone.
