Preview: Sony Ericsson W810i

Walkman, Black colour, new features, what do you need more? Sony Ericsson shows the real Walkman phone to the European market.

After succesfull devices as the Sony Ericsson T68i, T610, K750i and the Walkman version W800i. Sony Ericsson shows us the new W810i. The device is not a real new product but an follow-up of the old W800i, which was not the original Walkman device, but only shown due to time delays during development of the W810i.

The main changes between the devices are given below:

- Looks and colours (black and white)
- EDGE class 10.
- Quad band
- 21 MB of memory available for a user, which is less than the W800i
- NetFront Access browser improved view of internet pages
- Activity Menu key (the W800i lacked it)
- Light sensor automatically changes the keypad and screen backlighting depending on external light
- Red eye reduction
- Flash Lite supported fully, including realization of the interfaces in third party programs
- Different joystick installed
- Autofocus similarly to the W900i
- Phone size one millimeter thinner than W800i 100 x 46 x 19.5 mm
- A new program for synchronization with a PC. Creating SMS/MMS, synchronizing data with MS Outlook and making data archives.
- RSS Reader is included

If we now look at these changes, the first thing that really comes forward are the changes in the looks of the device. The black colour looks really great and the other changes make the device more compact than the W800i. The W810i does not give the plastic feel from the W900i and will be available in white, but only depended on the country you life in.

The central key is much better than the joystick on the W800i. It feels ok and works really good. Also the amount vertical movement is rather low and you do need to push quite hard when you press the central key. But it gives a much better feeling than the old central key. The new keypad around the central key feels like the T610 keypad and the keys can easily be used with large fingers. The new setup of the keys is really a superb improvement and it looks like key problems are gone.

Furthermore there not that many changes. The speaker on the backend is the same and the camera cover is not a missing part, but it could give some problems in relation to cratches on the camera glass cover. Next to this the back cover can be opened much easier now.

Other issues as EDGE and Quad band where not tested also the browser and several camera options looked the same as in the W800i, but do have changes. However the light sensor is something which needs some attention. The sensor is positioned above the screen and only works in a dark environment. It could not be checked just by putting your finger on the sensor. The position of the sensor is the same as Nokia uses.

The last thing that needs to be covered is the screen, which is a little bit larger than the W800i and has a screen brightness adjustment when you look at it from different directions. The brightness is different in several directions than the W800i.

The final conclusion regarding the W810i indicates that Helen is a nice successor for the W800i when you need Quad band or when you like the new looks and changes in the UI and functionality. If you like your W800i, than stick with it, because the amount of changes are not that large. However I would change mine W800i for it, if I had one. The W810i is a really nice device. The looks are superb and make it one of the hottest devices around. The keyboard is a real change and something I would prefer immediately. But still it will be hard change to make for everybody with a K750i or W810i. Using the device yourself around the market introduction in March would be the best thing to do.
