Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide CAD renders show strikingly wide design

Samsung is working on a wider version of the Galaxy Fold behind the scenes. Blueprints of the Fold Wide have now surfaced, and a comparison with previously leaked images of the Fold 8 reveals Samsung's plans.

After years of making minor updates to its foldables, Samsung now seems ready to experiment in a big way again. After previously releasing the TriFold in limited quantities, which sold out at lightning speed every time, it is now the turn of a wider foldable. This Fold 8 Wide looks like a tablet when unfolded, but its folded appearance is still hard to describe.

When folded, the Fold 8 Wide looks very wide and square. A bit like a passport. This immediately reminds us of the BlackBerry Passport. The big difference is that this Samsung does not have a physical keyboard, and a true tablet screen is hidden inside.

Wide variant screen ratio limits productivity

Both these CAD renders of the Fold 8 Wide and those of the previously released Fold 8 surfaced at AndroidHeadline. And so they made the comparison between the two foldables, which gives you a good idea of how big both devices are relative to each other.

As is clear from the image above, the Fold 8 Wide is considerably shorter than the Fold 8. The extra width isn't too bad when putting both phones on top of each other, though. As a result, the regular Fold 8 still has more screen area than the Wide. The latter will be more suitable for media consumption due to its aspect ratio, while the Fold 8 makes you more productive by more easily displaying multiple apps at once.

Camera concessions on Wide model

That Samsung may be positioning the Wide as simpler than the Fold 8 is evidenced by the number of cameras on the back. We see two on the Wide, versus three on the Fold 8. Don't confuse "simple" with "cheap." Altho we wouldn't be surprised if the Wide becomes cheaper than the Fold 8, we don't assume it will be significantly cheaper. For that, you still have to look at Samsung's Flip series.

Strategic move versus upcoming iPhone Fold

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is expected to be announced along with the other Fold and Flip models in the fall of 2026. This will also be around the expected release of Apple's first foldable: the iPhone Fold. It too is rumoured to be relatively wide. Samsung does not want to wait for that and is already anticipating it with its own model.
