Smart rings are rings that you wear on your finger and which are fitted with a range of sensors. They’re best worn on the index, middle or ring finger. The thumb and little finger are not recommended. It doesn’t matter which hand you wear the ring on – just choose whichever feels most comfortable.

Just like a smartwatch, but different

A smart ring shares many of the same functions as a smartwatch, but is less obtrusive due to the lack of a screen. This also means there are fewer distractions. It also ensures a longer battery life, typically lasting up to a week. Most smartwatches, on the other hand, need to be charged every day.

Smart ring brands

There are a number of brands specialising in smart rings, including Oura, which launched the first smart ring in 2013. Other well-known smart ring manufacturers include:

Companion app

As there is no display, a connection to a phone is always required. Most manufacturers have developed their own companion app, but some also synchronise with Google Fit or Apple Health.

With some smart rings, you need to take out a subscription to use them. The Oura is an example of this. With others, there are no monthly costs. This sometimes means that the purchase price is slightly higher.
