‘Mid-range’ is an English term referring to the average smartphone. These aren’t the most feature-packed models, but they’re certainly not the most basic either. In recent years, this category has become incredibly crowded, mainly due to competition from Chinese brands. This is good news for consumers, as it means there’s plenty of choice. What’s more, the models have improved significantly compared to a few years ago.

Mid-range competition

Manufacturers have to pull out all the stops to stand out in this category. A low price is no longer enough. Due to the rise of Chinese manufacturers, mid-range smartphones these days need to be made from premium materials. And thanks to the falling cost of components, they usually come equipped with multiple cameras and high-capacity batteries. However, this wide range does have one drawback: not every mid-range smartphone is of the same quality. It’s up to us to help you distinguish between them.

Keep an eye out for software updates

Whilst not every manufacturer releases low-end smartphones, this is not the case for mid-range models. Virtually every manufacturer has at least one model or series in this category in its range. If possible, always try to choose a new mid-range model. These often feature the latest technology, which is always a plus in this category. Furthermore, these types of phones aren’t supported for years on end and don’t receive new software updates indefinitely. With Android smartphones in particular, make sure you check which version it comes with and how long updates will continue to be released. Whilst with expensive high-end flagship models you’ll usually get two updates, with mid-range models you’ll be lucky to get just one.
