The best translation of refurbished is ‘refreshed’, but the term ‘refurbished’ itself has now become sufficiently established to be recognised. Refurbished products are often seen as second-hand, but that is not actually the case. Refurbished products must meet strict criteria. We explain exactly what these are below.
What is refurbished?
Refurbished phones are second-hand phones that are given a new lease of life. They are checked, cleaned, data is wiped and, if necessary, minor repairs are carried out. A new battery, for example. This ensures the product is ready for action again. Not only are refurbished products better for the environment, but they also save you a lot of money. New phones are expensive, especially the latest flagship models.
Not all refurbished phones are the same. For instance, a phone that has been kept in a case will look better. To distinguish between the different levels of wear and tear, there are three different grades:
- Grade A: As good as new
- Grade B: Slightly used
- Grade C: Visibly used
Generally speaking, the better the refurbished product looks, the higher the price. Where we have this information, we display it and you can filter your search accordingly. In all other cases, we label them as ‘refurbished’.
Refurbished Quality Mark
Suppliers of refurbished products can display the Refurbished Quality Mark. This ensures that, as a consumer, you know you are buying a reliable, high-quality product. Products are checked against a 50-point checklist and come with a 2-year warranty, which also covers the battery. The quality mark was established by Techniek Nederland, with the inspections carried out by TÜV Nederland. Companies that use the quality mark include:

Other second-hand items
Online shops also often sell non-new products, but under a different name. Think of products that have been returned. Perhaps the product did not meet expectations or was the wrong colour. Each shop gives these items a different name. Think of ‘outlet’ or ‘second chance’, as Coolblue does.
