About Black Friday
Friday 28 November 2025 is Black Friday again. This phenomenon, which came over from America, is starting to gain a foothold here too. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, which is traditionally used to exchange unwanted gifts. Retailers then often stunt prices to attract even more customers who start their Christmas shopping by then.
History of Black Friday
The origins of Black Friday, or Black Friday, are not entirely known. The fact is, however, that it originated in America. The term Black Friday, or any other random black day, is often given to a traffic jam, stock market crash or disaster. Presumably, Black Friday as we know it once started with a major traffic jam the day after Thanksgiving Day. That is a day off for Americans, making it an ideal day for Christmas shopping.
There are also some fables about the origin of the name. For instance, there is the rumour that shops are only out of costs after Thanksgiving and thus write black figures. But that is not true.
Black Friday in the Netherlands
Thanksgiving is not celebrated here but by now the phenomenon of Black Friday is well known here. Like many other American 'holidays' like Halloween and Valentine's Day, it is increasingly celebrated here. This is partly because, as Dutch people, we do love a bargain and partly because we are increasingly making purchases online. And Black Friday, in particular, is something that many online retailers participate in.
Cyber Monday
Besides Black Friday, we see another phenomenon emerging; Cyber Monday. Whereas Black Friday is more something for physical electronics shops, Cyber Monday is specifically meant for online retailers. The term first surfaced in 2005 and is becoming increasingly popular. Cyber Monday in the Netherlands will take place on Monday 1 December 2025.
