By now, many mobile phones no longer require you to wait hours for a fully charged battery. They feature fast charging. That only works with a corresponding fast charger. This is not always included so that is something to look out for when buying one. Several fast-charging methods now exist, each with its own name. The most common is Qualcomm's 'Quick Charge'. But manufacturers have sometimes also come up with their own techniques, including:

  • Adaptive Fast Charge (Samsung)
  • SuperCharge (Huawei)
  • TurboPower (Motorola)
  • Dash Charge and Warp Charge (OnePlus)
  • (Super)VOOC (Oppo)
  • PumpExpress (MediaTek)

It is highly recommended to always use the original charger and cable with your phone. Most charging problems even resulting in fire come because the original charger and cable have not been used. Fast wireless charging is also possible nowadays but it does not (yet) reach the speed of wired charging. Want fast charging in the shortest time possible? Then turn off your phone while charging. That will make it even faster.

Power

One quick charger is not like another. This is because every quick charger works with a different power, also expressed in watts. The higher the power, the faster the charging. Officially, there is no minimum power to be designated as a fast charger, but in practice we see that chargers from 18 watts and up are designated as fast chargers. This is quite an improvement over the standard 5 Watt of the past. As a rule, the higher the power (expressed in Watts or W), the faster your battery is charged.

Is fast charging harmful to your battery?

There are some ambiguities about fast charging and the effect it has on the battery. Some past problems such as overcharging, overheating and degradation have been largely eliminated. Your phone will automatically pause the charging process once it is full. Some phones reduce power as soon as the battery becomes fuller. And thanks to sensors, temperature is monitored. Degradation from fast charging is thus no worse than 'normal' charging.
