eSIM stands for imbedded SIM and is also referred to in technical terms as 'imbedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card' (eUICC). eSIM is the successor to the physical plastic SIM card. Over the years it has become smaller and smaller. From the original format of a credit card (1FF), to the miniSIM (2FF), microSIM (3FF) and finally nanoSIM (4FF). Despite the fact that they became smaller and smaller, there are still problems with a physical SIM card. Namely that you can get rid of it and that it takes up space inside your phone.

Benefits eSIM

All these problems are solved by eSIM. The user can change provider and subscription via a menu. But this can also be done remotely so eSIM is also suitable for IoT applications such as in cars.

History of eSIM

eSIM is not intended for mobile phones only. The first product with an eSIM chip is the Samsung Gear S2 3G. This smart watch came on the market in 2016. However, the eSIM standard has been talked about since 2010. However, it would take until 2016 before the GSMA organisation agreed and the specification became official.
