The company Nothing Technology Limited, often written briefly as NOTHING, is an originally British company founded by Carl Pei. This Chinese-Swedish entrepreneur previously founded OnePlus, so he is no stranger to the phone industry.

Nothing history

Carl Pei founded Nothing in 2020 after he left OnePlus. Together with investors Tony Fadell (iPod creator), Steve Huffman (Reddit CEO), Kevin Lin (Twitch founder) and Casey Neistat (YouTuber), they launched the Nothing Ear (1) in 2021. These wireless earbuds had a partially transparent casing.

The first phone hit the market in early 2023, the Nothing Phone (1). This was a premium mid-range model also with a partially transparent body and this time LED lighting that was part of the interface.

Nothing OS

Nothing uses the Android operating system for its phones with its own skin on top called Nothing OS. This interface is characterised by the frequent use of black and white with red accents and the font consisting of dots.

The LED lights on the back are used by the interface to indicate notifications, for example. This is called Glyph Interface. For ringtones, it's called Glyph Ringtone and if you want to use the LED lights as a torch, it's called Glyph Torch.

CMF by Nothing

Nothing launched a sub-brand called "CMF by Nothing" in 2023. This company is trying to bring Nothing's design philosophy to other products including wireless earbuds, smartwatches and chargers.
