While the Galaxy S series consists of the most comprehensive models, most of its sales are Galaxy A series models. Incidentally, there is no official meaning for the letter A, but it is the evolutionary successor to the Galaxy Alpha which was a stylish phone with appealing features.
Galaxy A = Awesome
Another meaning for the letter A could be Awesome. Samsung often uses the term in marketing statements of Galaxy A series models as well as for some official colours. In reality, the A is a category designation, just like Galaxy S (for high-end models) and Galaxy Z (for foldable models).
The Galaxy A series can be seen as the mid-range of Samsung phones. Most models have a high-quality and colourful AMOLED screen which is easy to read outdoors. Also, many have multiple cameras including with an ultra-wide-angle lens so that extra much can be captured in pictures.
Meaning of model number
Within the A category, Samsung gives models a 2-digit number. The higher the first number; the more comprehensive the model. Currently, Samsung uses the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 5. The more elaborate the model, the more expensive it is. So the cheapest and simplest models are called A1x and the most elaborate A5x.
- Galaxy A5x series: Most comprehensive models from the Galaxy A series with the best cameras, fastest performance and from the most premium materials
- Galaxy A3x series: Models offering the most value for money, the perfect balance between performance and price
- Galaxy A1x/A2x series: Affordable entry-level models for basic use like calling, WhatsAppen and internet
The second and last number in the name says something about the generation. For example, the Galaxy A36 is the successor to the Galaxy A35. You can't immediately tell from the number in which year it was released but Samsung does release a new generation every year for the A1x, A3x and A5x.
