eSIM stands for embedded-SIM and is also referred to in technical terms as 'embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card' (eUICC). eSIM is the successor to the physical plastic SIM card. That one got smaller and smaller over the years. From originally the size of a credit card (1FF), to the miniSIM (2FF), microSIM (3FF) and eventually nanoSIM (4FF). Despite getting smaller and smaller, there remain problems with a physical SIM card. Namely that you can lose it and that it takes up space inside your phone.

Advantages eSIM

All these problems are solved by eSIM. Users can switch providers and subscriptions via a menu. But this can also be done remotely, making eSIM also suitable for IoT applications such as in autos.

History of eSIM

eSIM is not exclusively intended for mobile phones. In fact, the first product with an eSIM chip was the Samsung Gear S2 3G. This smart watch hit the market in 2016. However, the eSIM standard had been talked about since 2010. However, it would take until 2016 before the GSMA organisation agreed and the specification became official.
