The realme 8 Pro is an affordable smartphone with 108MP camera. In addition to a good camera, it features fast charging and decent performance. Whether that's enough to be a good phone is something we have to find out first.

Super AMOLED Fullscreen: big with lots of contrast

Do you dare to take the plunge? That's pretty much the life motto of realme. For the amount they ask, we think so. It is so low that we are not afraid. And you get quite a lot in return. Starting with a 6.4 inch screen. This uses a colourful Super AMOLED panel. Colours burst out of the screen and because AMOLED does not require any backlighting, black really does seem black. Outdoor reading is no problem with the maximum brightness of 1000 nits. At the bottom of the screen is a built-in fingerprint scanner. The only thing the screen of the realme 8 Pro does not have is a high refresh rate. On the other hand, the touch speed is high: 180Hz. This makes it react faster to your touches.

108MP camera monster

But at the end of the day, it's all about the camera. On the back of the 8 Pro, there's an impressive array of 4 different cameras along with a dual LED flash. The main camera features a 108MP sensor (the Samsung ISOCELL HM2). This enormous sensor combines 9 pixels in 1 with high sharpness and light sensitivity. Images are therefore sharp and clear, even in the dark. The 8 Pro also has an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a macro lens for shots from 4cm and a black and white camera. Remarkably, you can zoom up to 3x optically. Usually, cheaper camera phones cannot do that. You will also find fun camera extras such as Tilt-shift which makes the world suddenly look like a miniature city.

SuperDart fast charging

The realme 8 Pro uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 720G; a mid-range chipset that can come along nicely. There are variants available with 6 and 8GB of RAM memory, cheque before purchasing which model you have. The storage memory is always the same 128GB but is expandable with a MicroSD memory card. There is also room for a 2nd SIM card. 5G support is missing so the fastest you can use mobile internet via 4G. Besides the camera, we find the SuperDart Charge fast charging the most interesting. This is up to 50 Watts and is therefore much faster than the competition. The battery has a neat capacity of 4500 mAh and can therefore be fully recharged in less than half an hour.
