What should you look out for when shopping for tablet deals?

Don’t focus on the discount percentage; look at the price you’re paying today. Shops often calculate their discount based on the manufacturer’s recommended retail price, and almost nobody pays that price after the first few months. In the overview above, you can see the current prices from each shop side by side, so you can see for yourself what a tablet actually costs.

What does a ‘from’ price actually mean?

A crossed-out ‘from’ price is usually the manufacturer’s recommended retail price or the launch price, not the amount the shop was charging last week. If a shop in the EU announces a price reduction, it must state the lowest price from the previous 30 days. If only a recommended retail price is crossed out, the discount is therefore of little significance. It’s better to compare with what other shops are charging at the same time.

When do tablet prices fall?

Tablets are at their most expensive around the time of their launch and then gradually fall in price. The biggest drops occur at three key moments: as soon as the successor model is announced, during the sales weeks around Black Friday in November, and when shops clear their stock at the end of a quarter. A tablet from the previous generation is therefore often the smartest buy: in everyday use, you’ll hardly notice any difference compared to the latest model, but the price difference is all the more noticeable.

Where the discounts are biggest

Not every brand moves at the same pace. This determines whether you’re better off waiting or striking straight away.

  • Apple iPads: hold their value for a long time, but older generations remain available for years and are then considerably cheaper than the latest model.
  • Samsung tablets: fall somewhere in between, with regular competitive offers and bundles that include a keyboard cover or earphones.
  • Android tablets: see their prices drop the fastest and are cheaper even when new, but check how long the manufacturer promises to provide updates.

Buy now or wait a little longer?

A deal is only a deal if the tablet actually suits what you want to use it for. So first check whether you need a larger screen, more storage or mobile internet, and then filter by price.

Don’t forget the additional costs

A low tablet price doesn’t tell the whole story. Factor in the accessories you’ll need anyway: a case, and if you’re drawing or typing, a stylus or keyboard too. Together, these can easily cost more than the amount you save on the tablet itself. With cheap offers, also pay attention to the storage capacity, as the entry-level model with the least storage is usually the version that goes on offer.
