Bloomberg: Apple considers collapsible iPhone as competitor to Galaxy Z Flip

If the rumors are true, we will see the first foldable iPhone by the end of 2026. After much deliberation, Apple is said to have opted for a form factor that folds horizontally, similar to a book. But that might not be all. According to the usually well-informed Bloomberg, Apple is considering a second foldable.

Should Apple indeed present a foldable by the end of 2026, it will be richly late. Competitor Samsung already released its first foldable in 2020 and others such as Motorola, Huawei and Google followed in subsequent years. Now that Apple also wants to enter this market, it seems to want to go all out right away. Because after the first iPhone Fold, we might also get an iPhone Flip.

Would the iPhone Flip look like this?

iPhone Flip: The battle for the clamshell

This is according to a news report that appeared on Bloomberg. A clamshell iPhone would take on Samsung's popular Galaxy Z Flip Series and Motorola's razr Series. The advantage of this form factor is its compact size and Lower price compared to other foldables.

Apple may be considering a clamshell iPhone, but that doesn't mean it will come out anytime soon. And certainly not that it will be significantly cheaper. Apple is not known for releasing cheap products, so the tech giant would rather innovate with high-end specs in a different form factor than compete on price alone.

Peace requested: release not before 2027

A release in 2026 has been ruled out and early 2027 is not in the cards either. So Samsung and Motorola still have some time to defend their market share with new generations of foldables. For now, however, Samsung continues to dominate the clamshell foldables market with its current Z Flip 7. And by then possibly even with the eighth or ninth generation Flip that early rumors suggest will no longer have a visible fold.
