Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra: Samsung names its new foldables
According to Ice Universe, who is usually well-informed, Samsung's new wide foldable will have a different name than previously assumed. It won't be the Fold 8 Wide or the Wide Fold; it will be something that seems confusing at first. However, Samsung seems to have a good reason for it.
Samsung is working on a trio of new foldables for this summer; the Flip 8, Fold 8 and a new type that is wider and possibly called Fold Wide. Today Ice Universe shares a striking revelation about the actual naming. While the name of the Flip 8 is fixed, the device that until now was called Fold 8 Wide will soon go by the name Fold 8.
And the device previously called Fold 8 will enter the market as the Fold 8 Ultra. Samsung has not previously used the Ultra naming for its Galaxy Z series, though it has for the S series where it is used for the most comprehensive top model.

What justifies the Ultra addition is still unknown, especially since initial signs do not indicate a significant difference from the current Fold 7. It is not inconceivable that Samsung may mis(use) the addition to justify a price increase. Samsung has been partially passing on rising chip costs to consumers this year, altho so far the most expensive flagships have been spared.
Another possibility is that Samsung wants to be prepared for the arrival of the iPhone Ultra. By also releasing an Ultra foldable, consumers will immediately know which model takes on Apple.
Impact on rest of Galaxy line
At first glance, the wide 'Wide' does not look like the spiritual successor to the Fold 7, but that may be a matter of getting used to it. If Samsung also has a successor in store for the TriFold, we are curious to see what its new name will be. TriFold 8 perhaps?
The launch of Samsung's latest Galaxy Z foldables is scheduled for sometime this summer. In addition to the Fold 8 series mentioned here, a new Flip model is also expected. Last year's event took place on July 9, the year before on July 10.
