What should you look out for when choosing a Doro smartphone?

A Doro smartphone is a standard Android phone with a simplified user interface: large icons, high contrast, a dedicated home button and menus that guide you step by step through each task. So you don’t buy one of these handsets for its specifications, but for its ease of use and safety features. You can see the current models and prices in the overview above.

Can’t decide between two handsets? Put them side by side in our phone comparison tool. If you’re not yet sure what sort of phone you’re looking for, start by going through our selection guide.

Smartphone or feature phone: which is right for the user?

Doro offers two product ranges side by side, and that’s the first decision you’ll need to make. If the user is comfortable using a touchscreen, a smartphone is almost always the better choice, as it allows them to stay in touch via the family’s WhatsApp group. If that’s not possible, then a handset with physical keys is the way to go.

        • Doro smartphone: touchscreen running Android, so WhatsApp, video calls, online banking, photos and sat-nav. More features, but also more to explain.
        • Doro feature phone: a classic phone with physical keys for making calls and sending text messages. No apps, but a battery that lasts for days.
        • Dumbphone: a deliberately basic handset with no distractions, also popular as a second phone for holidays or festivals.
        • Phones for the elderly: all brands side by side, from simple keypad phones to smartphones with a customised interface.

The alarm button is handy, but it’s not an emergency call centre

On the back of a Doro there is a separate emergency button. A single press sends an emergency message with your GPS location to the contacts you have pre-selected. This provides peace of mind, but be honest about what it is: the alert goes to family or neighbours, not to a professional emergency call centre. If you want round-the-clock support, you’ll need a separate subscription service for that.

Remote assistance and improved voice clarity

Two features that are easy to overlook on a spec sheet. Doro offers remote assistance via TeamViewer: with your permission, a family member or helpdesk can view your screen and adjust a setting, rather than having to explain over the phone where something is located. It also features audio technology (ClearSound) that makes speech clearer, which is helpful for those with hearing loss. A charging stand is available for the Aurora series, which doubles as a holder for video calls and a night light.

        Which Doro smartphones are available

Doro sells its Android handsets under the Aurora and Leva brand names. The Aurora series is the most comprehensive range, with screens ranging from 4.5 to 6.1 inches and a physical home button; there is even a model that combines a touchscreen with a physical keypad, for those who don’t want to miss out on dialling a number. You can see which models are currently available in the Netherlands and how much they cost in the overview above.

What you pay and what you get

Expect to pay roughly 175 to 325 euros for a new Doro smartphone. For that amount, you could buy a Samsung, Motorola or Xiaomi handset with a faster processor and a better camera. That’s precisely the trade-off: here, you’re paying for the interface, the emergency button and the support, not for the hardware. If the user is perfectly happy with standard Android, then also take a look at basic smartphones or budget smartphones; these offer more features for the same budget.

Five years of updates are now mandatory

Since 20 June 2025, new smartphones in the EU must receive at least five years of operating system and security updates, and every device must carry an energy label with a repairability score (EU regulation). This also applies to smartphones with a customised interface for older people. Please note that models launched before that date are not subject to this requirement. You can see how long a specific device will receive updates on the specifications page: click on ‘Specifications’ at the top of the product page.
