HMD Global is originally a Finnish company that has its roots in the former Nokia. It is even based at the Nokia Campus in Espoo, Finland. The letters HMD stand for Human Mobile Devices.
History of HMD Global
After Nokia’s mobile phone division was sold to Microsoft in 2014, part of it was bought back in 2016 by a new company called HMD Global. This company acquired the rights to use the Nokia name on mobile phones.
HMD Global was founded by a number of former Nokia employees with the support of the Taiwanese company Foxconn. At the end of 2016, HMD Global released its first Nokia mobile phone: the Nokia 150. This was a fairly basic feature phone. Shortly afterwards, in 2017, HMD Global announced its first Nokia smartphone: the Nokia 6.
