Buy HMD feature phones

HMD’s feature phones are classic keypad mobiles: making calls, sending text messages, a battery that lasts for days, and no other distractions. HMD Global manufactured these phones under the Nokia brand for many years and, since 2024, has also been releasing handsets under its own brand name, with the same emphasis on simplicity and long battery life. Below is the range, showing the current prices charged by participating mobile network operators for each model. Use the filters to narrow down your search, or view all feature phones.

What should you look out for when choosing an HMD feature phone?

Look beyond the design and check three things: whether the handset can make calls on current networks, how you operate it, and what features you’re consciously sacrificing. The latter is no minor issue with a feature phone, as you’re giving up more than just apps.

Network and calls

This is the most important technical point, and yet it’s the one most often overlooked. Older networks are being phased out in the Netherlands, so a handset must support 4G to continue making calls. But simply having 4G listed in the specifications isn’t enough: the handset must also support making calls via 4G, which is referred to as VoLTE. Bear in mind that your provider must support this for that specific handset; if the model isn’t on your provider’s list, making calls via 4G still won’t work. Check this on your provider’s website, especially if you’re considering an older model.

Keys, size and battery

The appeal lies in the user experience. You can feel where you’re pressing, you can make calls without looking, and the battery lasts for days rather than hours. A flip phone has the added advantage that the screen is protected and you end a call by closing the phone; if that’s what you’re looking for, take a look at the overview of flip phones.

  • Flip phone: compact in your pocket, screen protected, close it to hang up
  • Bar-style phone: always ready for use, usually the easiest to operate and the lightest

What you’re giving up

Be honest about this before you order. A feature phone doesn’t run Android, so you’re limited to what the manufacturer has included. Online banking, DigiD and sat-nav aren’t included, and apps that were once available may lose support over time. The camera is there for a quick snap and nothing more, and the browser is suitable for a single, simple page at best. Anyone who wants that but is looking for simplicity would be better off with a basic smartphone.

Who is an HMD feature phone intended for?

Broadly speaking, three groups. People who deliberately want to do away with their smartphone and simply want to be reachable. Parents looking for a first phone without a screen full of apps. And anyone who wants a sturdy second handset for the campsite, in the toolbox or in the car. See also the broader overviews of dumbphones, phones for the elderly and phones for children.
