What should you look out for in an Honor Magic Pro?

When buying a Magic Pro, it’s mainly the camera you’re getting. In this range, Honor features the most powerful telephoto lens and the fastest Qualcomm chip currently available. The Magic8 Pro, for example, features a 200-megapixel telephoto lens with 3.7x optical zoom, alongside a 50-megapixel main camera and a 50-megapixel wide-angle lens, all on a 6.71-inch OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. You can see what’s currently available and how much it costs in the overview above.

Optical zoom makes all the difference

The telephoto lens is what sets the Magic Pro apart from the rest of the range. With 3.7x optical zoom, you can bring a face or a detail closer without the photo becoming blurry; digital zoom simply enlarges the pixels. Bear in mind, however, that such a telephoto lens performs less well in low light than the main camera. Indoors and in the evening, the zoom often falls back on a cropped image from the main camera, in which case you’ll see little benefit from it.

The European version is not the same as the Chinese one

Honor is launching the Magic Pro in China first and only then in Europe, sometimes with modified hardware. The Magic8 Pro in Europe has a 6270 mAh battery, compared to 7200 mAh in the Chinese version. Same name, different hardware. On the other hand, charging is lightning-fast: 100 watts via cable and 80 watts wirelessly. So compare the specifications on the Dutch product page rather than relying on a review from abroad.

It pays to wait: the price is falling rapidly

A new Magic Pro costs around 1,299 euros at launch. The Magic8 Pro started at that price, with a pre-order price of 1,099 euros. Honor’s flagship models then drop in price rapidly: the Magic7 Pro went from 1,299 euros to around 699 euros. Those in no hurry can buy the previous generation for roughly half the price and, in practice, won’t be missing out on much.

Pro, foldable or cheaper?

The Magic Pro isn’t the obvious choice for everyone. These four options are the most likely choices.

  • Current generation: the Magic8 range is the latest Magic generation, including a cheaper Lite model.
  • Foldable: the Magic V-foldables unfold to reveal a screen of almost 8 inches, but are considerably more expensive.
  • More affordable: the N-series runs on the same software and offers a great everyday camera at a fraction of the price.
  • Other brands: compare the Magic Pro with the best camera phones from Apple, Samsung and Google.
