Which iPhone 17 is right for you?
The range comprises five models that share many features on paper, but are designed for very different users in practice. You only need to consider three things: how important the camera is to you, what size you want to hold in your hand, and how much you’re willing to spend.
How do the iPhone 17 models really differ?
- iPhone 17: the all-rounder: a 6.3-inch screen with a smooth refresh rate (120Hz), dual 48MP camera and the best all-round balance in the range.
- iPhone 17e: the entry-level model: 6.1-inch, standard display (60Hz) and a single camera lens, more than enough for those who mainly use messaging apps, browse the web and take the odd snap.
- iPhone Air: by far the thinnest and lightest in the range (5.6 mm, 165 grams) with a large 6.5-inch screen; in return, you sacrifice battery life and get a single camera lens.
- iPhone 17 Pro: three 48MP cameras with a telephoto lens, the fastest chip and an aluminium unibody design.
- iPhone 17 Pro Max: the same Pro technology in the largest size, with the most space for the battery.
What you don’t need to worry about: every model has a 48MP main camera, a chip from the A19 family, USB-C, MagSafe and iOS updates until at least 2030 (with Apple, that’s a minimum; it’s usually longer). So you can’t go wrong with any of them; the real choice comes down to camera versatility, size and display.

Which model is right for whom?
Choose the iPhone 17 if you simply want the best all-round iPhone of this generation.
Choose the iPhone 17e if you feel that a fully-featured iPhone doesn’t have to be expensive.
Choose the iPhone Air if being thin and light is more important to you than battery life and zoom.
Choose the 17 Pro or Pro Max if you take a lot of photos or videos, whether in standard or large format.

iPhone 17 series or the latest generation?
Opting for an older series is often the smart choice: once a successor is released, prices usually drop, whilst the devices continue to receive the same iOS updates as the latest models for years to come. If you absolutely must have the very latest technology, take a look at the iPhone 18 series; if you’re mainly looking for great value for money, then the 17 series is exactly what you need. Want to save even more? Then take a look at the refurbished iPhones.
