    Google Pixel 5 product details

The Google Pixel 5 is Google's new flagship but one that does it just a little bit differently than previous years. It is not as high-end as last year, but fortunately we see that reflected in its price. Fortunately, other benefits remain intact such as fast updates, excellent camera performance and exclusive features.

Doesn't wants to do everything anymore

Google hasn't had an easy time on the phone in recent years. It does participate in the top with software, but on the hardware side it lags behind a bit. Pixel phones can't compete with the latest iPhones and Galaxy phones. Inconsistent decisions are to blame. For a long time, Google did not want to know anything about multiple cameras, and it also focused too much on techniques that turned out not to be the case. We think of Project Soli, the radar that recognizes faces and hand movements. It took up a lot of space on the Pixel 4 and the function turned out not to be as indispensable as we thought. Time to do it differently and the Pixel 5 is the first result of that. He doesn't try to do everything anymore and that results in him doing the things he does better and for a lower price.

    100% recycled aluminum

As said, the radar above the screen is gone, so the screen is now tight against the edge. The selfie camera is no longer in a notch but in a punch-hole in the corner. Also praise to Google that the display bezels has the same thickness everywhere. Many phones have a slightly thicker border at the bottom of the screen, the so-called chin. With the Pixel 5 everything is symmetrical. The screen measures 6 inches, which is compact these days. The resolution is Full HD and the 90Hz refresh rate ensures smooth animations. The housing is made of aluminum, which is always difficult with wireless charging. That's why most phones have a glass back. Yet Google has managed to build in wireless charging. You can even charge accessories with the Pixel 5; Reverse Wireless Charging is called that.

    Main Google Pixel 5 specifications

    • 6.0 inch Flexible OLED screen with FHD+ resolution and 90Hz refresh rate
    • Single 8MP selfie camera this time in punch-hole instead of notch
    • 12,2+16MP camera with ultra-wide-angle and Portrait Light
    • Aluminum body with 2-way wireless charging and physical fingerprint scanner
    • Snapdragon 765G-processor with 8GB LPDDR4x RAM memory
    • 128GB non expandable storage memory
    • 4080 mAh battery is big enough for 1 days use
    • 5G support for lightning-fast mobile internet
    • Came out with Android 11 with 3 promised Android upgrades

    Camera with Portrait Light

For years, Google set the bar very high on camera. The Pixel was the camera phone to beat. Also this year the camera is good but it doesn't break records anymore. The competition is on its heels. The camera is not bad either. The main camera still measures a 12.2 megapixel with large 1.4 ?m pixels and Dual Pixel Phase Detection. The Pixel 5 can absorb a lot of light with this and has a good night mode. New this year is a 16MP camera with ultra-wide-angle lens. Its angle of view is 107°, which is narrower than some other phones. They are often close to the 120° limit. This means you capture a little less. The famous HDR+ ensures that every picture actually rolls out well, without complicated settings. New is the virtual lamp that you can put in a photo afterwards. With this Portrait Light you can expose a person from any angle. Zooming can only be done digitally. A separate zoom lens is missing.

    No longer the fastest

The battery of the Pixel 5 with 4080 mAh seems a bit on the small side but most reviewers get the end of the day with it. This is helped by the software; Battery Saver does its job properly. And if you use Dark Mode you can also give the battery a helping hand. What will also help is that the Pixel 5 does not have the most powerful processor. The Snapdragon 765G will be fast enough for most people and most tasks, it's not the fastest thing available anymore. And the faster the processor, the more it consumes. So every disadvantage has its advantage.

Google previews Android 12 at Google I/O: becomes much more personal

    Industry news ·

During Google's annual Google I/O event, it explained the newest version of Android: version 12. Android becomes a lot more personal, secure and works better with others.

Every year Google previews the newest version of Android during its Google I/O event. And this year is no different. Android 12 focusses on these three things:

    • Deeply personal
    • Private and secure
    • Better together

    Material You

Android 12 is getting a new design language called 'Material You'. It follows 'Material Design' and is considered a personalized version of it. This goes beyond themes, you can choose colors, shapes and animations. Material You is coming first to Pixel phones in the fall of 2021 and later to other Android products.

    Material You

Android becomes a lot more personal with Material You. That's a good thing because there are now 3 billion active Android devices. Material You is the biggest design change in years. There are not only new colors, there are new shapes with lots of animations. This makes Android 12 feel a lot more natural and personal.

    Privacy

There are new privacy features coming to Android 12 that we've seen before in iOS. When an app uses the microphone or camera, an indicator will be shown. Don't want apps to use the microphone at all? There is toggle available in Quick Settings to disable the microphone completely.

    Password Manager

Google is improving the Password Manager in Android. It now works together with the Password Manager in Chrome what you use on your computer. You can also import passwords from other password managers. And has one of your passwords leaked online? Then you get a notification and you can immediately change that password.

Android Password Manager and Locked folders

In terms of privacy, there are also some improvements. You can delete the search results of the past 15 minutes. Ideal for when you want to keep something 'secret' without deleting your entire search history. Also new is Locked Folders in Photos. This feature already existed on newer Pixel phones but is now coming to other Android phones as well. It's a secret folder in Photos where you can keep photos that are only shown after entering your fingerprint or password.

Google Maps: Eco-friendly routes and Safer routing

Some improvements were also announced for the popular Google Maps. Improvements aimed at reducing emissions. Google was already working on that by adding 150,000 miles of bike paths. If you prefer to go by car, there are now 'Eco-friendly routes' and 'Safer routing'. Eco-friendly routing combines traffic density, distance and road surface quality to calculate the most efficient route that uses the least amount of fuel. And Safer routing uses artificial intelligence to calculate a route based on the best road and traffic conditions.

    Beta available today

The first beta of Android 12 is available today for a number of phones from Asus, OnePlus, Oppo and TCL. Of course, you can also install the beta on your Pixel phone including a Pixel 5. This beta still contains bugs and errors so think carefully before you install it. Android 12 won't officially be released until the fall.

Google announces almost identical Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5

    Phone news ·

Google has announced its new Pixel flagship. Still, this year's Pixel 5 isn't the kind of flagship you'd expect. There are also a lot of similarities with the also announced Pixel 4a 5G. One of them is the Portrait Light mode.

The Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a (5G) share so many similarities we are better off mentioning the differences. For example, the materials are different. The Pixel 5 consists of Gorilla Glass 6 on the front with an aluminum back and is IPX8 water resistant, the Pixel 4a (5G) gets Gorilla Glass 3 with a polycarbonate back.

The Google Pixel 5 in Sorta Sage

The 4a 5G at 6.2 inches is slightly larger than the 6-inch screen on the 5. This does not apply to the battery, where the Pixel 5 has a lead of a few mAh. The latter can be charged wirelessly and you can also charge accessories by placing them on the back. The Pixel 4a 5G has a head start on audio; it has a 3.5mm audio jack for your own headphones. To make up for that, the Pixel 5 gets a slightly smoother screen of 90Hz.

And the Pixel 4a 5G in Just Black

    Many similarities

So both have an OLED screen with punch-hole for the 8MP selfie camera, a dual rear camera with 12.2MP main sensor and 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens. More about that camera later. They also both have a Snapdragon 765G processor with 5G support. Only the model from the 5-series gets 8 GB of RAM memory, the 5G version from the 4-series has to make do with 6 GB of memory. Both have 128GB of storage memory built-in. Of the 4a 5G another version will be released with Sub-6 5G and one with the faster mmWave. If you list the specifications you will notice that the Pixel 4a 5G is not just a Pixel 4a with 5G.

    Pixel Portrait Light Mode
Portrait Light: add light to your photos afterwards

    Portrait Light Mode

Pixel phones are known for their good camera. New this year is the 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens but the most important new feature is Portrait Light. Here you can place a virtual lamp in your photos and play with the lighting. Google promises that this will even work with photos already shot thanks to the help of AI (artificial intelligence). The function comes first to the Google Pixel 4a (5G) and the Pixel 5 but Google promises to also equip previous Pixel phones with it.

Prices of the Google Pixel 5 will start at $699, the Pixel 4a (5G) will cost $499. The latter will be available in Clearly White and Just Black, the Pixel 5 will be available in Just Black and Sorta Sage (green).

Benchmark confirms Google Pixel 5 gets mid-range chipset

    Rumors ·

A recently discovered benchmark from the Google Pixel 5 reveals what processor Google will use. It will probably be the same chipset as the upcoming Pixel 4a (5G). This makes the Pixel 5 more mid-range than high-end flagship, as expected.

Apparently, Google has thought carefully about the future of Pixel phones. The most expensive Pixel models won't compete against the most expensive Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy, but instead will compete on price. And then you'll have to cut costs on something. Google chooses the processor. And so the Snapdragon 8xx series has been swapped for one out of the Snapdragon 7xx serie with slightly less performance.

    Google Pixel 5 benchmark

Fortunately, Google has enough knowledge to tweak Android in such a way that you won't notice any downgrade in speed. Unfortunately, we know from the first tests of the Pixel 4a, which is equipped with a Snapdragon 730, that it does not run completely smoothly. Now the Snapdragon 765G has a 20% more powerful CPU and GPU so it might not be that bad. The upcoming Pixel 5 is also undoubtedly helped by a generous amount of RAM. According to the same benchmark it will be 8 GB in total.

    Specifications Google Pixel 5

Earlier, Google announced that the Pixel 5 would be released somewhere in the autumn, probably October 8th. The device gets 5G support and most likely the radar with which the Pixel 4 debuted will disappear. Furthermore, we expect two cameras on the back, a selfie camera in a punch-hole and, how could it be otherwise, Android 11 pre-installed.

“No high-end processor for Google Pixel 5”

    Rumors ·

What makes a Pixel phone a Pixel phone? Is it an excellent camera? Is it the high-end specifications? Don't feel ashamed if you don't know the answer, because at Google they're not quite sure either. Especially if this rumor turns out true.

Until now, the Pixel came in 3 types; a large one with large screen and large battery, and a smaller one with (you guessed it) smaller screen and smaller battery. Both with very good cameras and high-end flagship worthy features. And then there was the Pixel a-variant with more or less the same camera capabilities in a cheaper package. But that is all going to change according to this report.

    Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 5G processor
The Snapdragon 765 is the slightly simpler brother of the 865

There have been rumors for some time that the Pixel 5 (and who knows also the Pixel 5 XL) has a Snapdragon 765 processor. And that's quite remarkable. This is not the most advanced processor of Qualcomm. And that was traditionally the CPU that Google used in its Pixel phones. A possible reason for a less powerful chipset is the lower price. By passing this on to the consumer, Google can make its Pixel phones cheaper. This will have to be done because the Pixel phones do not sell very well. Indeed, the sales of the Pixel 4 were very disappointing. As a result of those disappointing results, some employes left the company.

    Something has to change

And so something has to change. A lower price tag would certainly help given the success of the Pixel 3a. Both the Google Pixel 5 and the 5XL would have 5G support including the higher and therefore faster mmWave support. Earlier it appeared that Google's next Pixel phones would no longer use the Soli-radar. This allowed you to control the device with small hand gestures. On paper this seems handy, but in practice it didn't always work. Moreover, it took up a relatively large amount of space.

"No Motion Sense for Google Pixel 5"

    Rumors ·

It was presented as the next big thing during the Pixel 4 announcement; Motion Sense. It should revolutionize the way we interact with our phones. It turned out to be just a gimmick and a battery drainer. That combined with disappointing sales of the Pixel 4 results in Motion Sense not returning to the Pixel 5.

After a flying start Google's Pixel phone series is becoming more and more disappointing. Yes the cameras are above average but the huge lead Google had is gone. Moreover, new models are plagued by numerous problems. Defective microphones, reboot loops and blue display screen hues. Not to mention deliberate design choices such as too small batteries.

    Artist impression of Google Pixel.
Artist impression of the Google Pixel

The disappointing Pixel success has already led to consequences on the work floor. A few high-ranking employes have left the company. Now that Motion Sense is not the success it hoped for, it is suggested to be a one time adventure. The upcoming Pixel 5 will not get it, according to the rumor today. Instead, Google is likely to match other phone manufacturers and go with a more modern design with thin screen edges.

    End for Project Soli?

For Google this will be a disappointing setback. It worked many years on perfecting and miniaturizing 'Project Soli' to fit into a phone. Motion Sense could be used to mute your alarm clock and scroll through your music. Many early reviews concluded it as too unreliable and gimmicky. Google also struggled to get the radar technology approved for every country where it sold its phones. It remains to be seen if this is the end for Project Soli. Google has plenty of other products where it could be applied.
