LG is a South Korean conglomerate consisting of many companies, each dealing with a very different branch. Best known is LG Electronics which is responsible for all consumer electronics including televisions, mobile phones, tablets and smart watches.

LG Electronics history

Believe it or not, LG Electronics only exists in its current form since 1995. Before that, it was known as GoldStar. That company was founded in 1958 after the Korean War and joined forces with Lak Hui (pronounced 'Lucky') in 1983. Lucky-Goldstar was named LG in 1995 and then the slogan "Live's Good" came into being. LG's logo consists of the letters 'L' and 'G' placed in such a way that they form a smiling smiley face.

LG series

Although LG has been making mobile phones for some time now, it has only been releasing smartphones since 2010. LG uses Google's Android operating system for its smartphones. LG has divided its product portfolio into the following series, which usually consist of a single letter followed by a number;

  • V - Large premium and high-end flagships
  • G - High-end flagships
  • Q - Premium mid-range models
  • K - Mid-range models

The company said goodbye to the X, L and F series earlier. Also the Stylus series that came with a pen have not been made for some time now. LG briefly used the name Optimus from 2010 to 2013 but eventually dropped it. In the meantime the company has started again with a new name; ThinQ. This addition is given to products that have the necessary AI (artificial intelligence).

Low Android updates

LG is often criticized for coming late with Android updates. They are number 1 when it comes to slow updater of Android phones. This despite changes made by Google in order to be able to roll out Android updates faster and LG setting up a separate department for this purpose. For the top models there will usually be an update, but this usually takes a long time. If you're considering an LG phone with Android and think fast updates are important, this is something to take with you.

Single screens

Because LG also makes its own displays (LG Display), LG is sometimes able to bring out interesting telephone models. Think of the 2013 LG G Flex with a curved screen. It was also the first with a Quad HD screen in a mobile; the G3. At the announcement much criticized as overkill, now a much seen resolution in high-end phones. LG is also one of the few manufacturers that can make OLED screens that are known for their high contrast values.

LG Smartwatches

Besides telephones, LG also makes its own line smartwatches. The first one even came out in 2008; the GD910. At that time not very practical because of the short battery life. Since 2014, LG releases a new line of smart watches under the name G Watch. This G was said goodbye in 2015. From then on, it just became LG Watch.
